Monday

My Family Thinks That I'm Crazy!

Granted, I don't like to cook, but I do like to experiment... like I did last night. We were having spaghetti (which I never made btw) but I thought that the sauce tasted a little bland, so I took a jar of sweet pickles out of the refrigerator and chopped the up and then added them to my sauce. They looked at me in horror, but I didn't care even a little bit. To me, that was the best spaghetti sauce that I had tasted in a long time!!

If you don't experiment... how do you ever learn lol??

Are Sharp Knives Really Safer??

To be honest, I am using the oldest paring knife in history. I have no idea just how old it is, but I can't remember when or where I bought it. All I know is that I'm comfortable with it. It doesn't scare me and just looking at new ones in the cooking shops... well they scare me. With my old one, I know what it can do.  I have been using it for years and years!!

Does that make me crazy??  I'm sure that some of you will say Heck Yes! Go out and buy a new one.

Why I'm In Need of a New Apron

My grandmother always wore a full sized apron over her house dress. I was just thinking about that. I don't think that I ever saw Nanny, not in a dress!  But getting back to the apron. I wonder if they still make those full sized aprons. Actually, I don't even know if they make those aprons that tie around the waist.

Okay, I guess that I should tell you why I'm even talking about aprons!  I was making spaghetti sauce yesterday... pretty much fry some onions and then pour the sauce of  a can. Unfortunately, I never thought of the fact that I was wearing a white blouse! It is presently covered in little orange polka dots, thanks to the simmering sauce. I either will have to get an apron, or stop wearing white blouses when I try to cook. ;)

Need to Plant Some Rhubarb

Off to buy or at least look for some rhubarb before it is all sold out. I literally lived on the stuff when I was a kid. Whenever I was hungry, I would snap off a stalk and sit down under a tree and eat away. And I guess we had a lot because Mom seemed to make all kinds of desserts out the stuff. We were just talking about it this morning. Hubby said that in England, they used to have stewed rhubarb and custard for desserts. I'm also thinking of making some rhubarb syrup to mix with ice water... to quench our thirst this summer when we come in from the garden. That should do it!!!

Thursday

One Pot Bacon Pasta Bake

Need a quick meal that you can pretty much throw together in a matter of minutes?? Yes, this is my kind of recipe. There was just one problem. We don't eat meat anymore. But the recipe was too easy not to share so I'm linking the video right here!!

But back to the part about us not eating meat!!  So what to do instead?? We use Morningside Veggie Bacon ALL THE TIME. Actually we like it even more than the traditional bacon. It crisps up even better than real bacon and it doesn't shrink. Now what I would do is to cook the bacon separately until it's good and crispy and then sprinkle it over the pasta when it's ready to go into the oven. Every spoonful of pasta will get a good heaping spoonful of the "bacony" goodness!!

Add a Pinch

Have you ever looked in your refrigerator and picked out a bottle of something just for the fun of it. My dad used to do this all the time. Mom would go out shopping and take all of us girls, leaving dad at home with instructions to come up with something for dinner. Lets just say that dad had a way of grabbing odd things out of the fridge and coming up with something that tasted awesome!!  I think that he would simply make something that he new how to cook... and then add a pinch of this and a pinch of that... and somehow it always worked lol!!

Rhubarb For Dessert!!

I know that it is early, but I am going to hit up a garden center today to see if I can find some rhubarb crowns to plant. I can still remember mom cooking up a pot full of rhubarb and then for dessert, she would add a can of crushed pineapple. Oddly enough, it went incredibly well together.
I don't think that I can plant it yet, but at least I will have it when the time comes. Last year I started looking the minute we moved here and couldn't find it anywhere. So, if you want it... grab it  the minute you see it!!
